Donor sperm has been performed for decades. It is estimated that there are 30,000 babies conceived through donor sperm in this country each year. Unlike donor egg, donor sperm does not require IVF. There are many reasons why this treatment is used. There are men that are infertile, or carry a gene for a significant illness. There are men that had a vasectomy, and the couple does not want to go through an IVF procedure to use sperm from the testes or epidydimus. There are woman without a male partner who choose to conceive through donor sperm. There are many sperm banks, and specific features of the donor can be chosen. Although there is no identifying information provided, many sperm banks provide much background information, including level of education, profession, interests, etc.
Therapeutic Donor Insemination (TDI) is a simple office procedure. It is the same procedure as an IUI, but instead of the partner’s sperm, a donor’s sperm is used. Donor sperm can be used during a natural cycle, with ovulation induction or with IVF.
